I experiment with different combinations of flower colours for this style of semi abstract flower painting. I find that predominantly red flowers works very well, but I always like to add small amounts of other colours to the flower part of the painting too, even when a particular colour dominates. I also like to use more than one shade of red when painting this sort of modern art poppy painting.
I have painted simmilar pictures using a variety of backgrounds. My favourite is this faded blue backround which helps to create the impression of a landscape, with the picture fading to white at the top. But I have also tried and combination of a green foreground, fading to a blue sky, a completely white background, orange and yellow to suggest a sunset horizon and so on. There are almost unlimited options! With this piece I found that the darker blue background in the bottom half of the canvas helped to really highlight the many vivid colours in the stems of the flowers.
