This is a new version of my semi abstract red flower painting. This large canvas measures approximately 150 x 107.5 cm and I have used acrylic paint. In this picture I’ve experimented with using some light yellow as a base colour for the flower area, before then adding the red abstract flowers on top. Using the yellow in this way helps to suggest some yellow flowers in the background and also creates a degree of ‘warmth’ in the picture that was perhaps absent on some of my other paintings like this, where I applied the red paint for the flowers directly to the white canvas.
I like to experiment with different backgrounds to some of my abstract and semi-abstract landscapes and flower paintings. I initially painted a much smaller version of this painting and a customer asked whether it would be possible for me to paint it on to a much larger canvas. The customer was looking for a very large painting that would work with the red and brown shades that he has in his room. There are always differences when you scale up a painting is this way but overall I am very happy with the finished artwork.
I experiment with different combinations of flower colours for this style of semi abstract flower painting. I find that predominantly red flowers works very well, but I always like to add small amounts of other colours to the flower part of the painting too, even when a particular colour dominates. I also like to use more than one shade of red when painting this sort of modern art poppy painting.
