My abstract Autumn tree painting on a landscape canvas is one of my most popular pictures that I can paint in a variety of different sizes. I’ve just completed one of these for a customer on a box canvas that measured 120 x 80 x 4.5 cm. ‘Box’ canvas refers to the fact the stretched canvas is thicker than a regular stretched canvas, that is, the wooden stretcher bars are deeper. I used a box canvas for this painting because it makes the canvas stronger and less likely to bend or twist, which can occasionally happen with these larger canvases when you use thinner 1.8 cm thick wooden stretcher bars.
The photos above show the first version of this tree painting. There’s many different colours in the painting with lots of orange and yellow in the leaf area. Some of these leaves have fallen on to the green grass below and I’ve used red paint to simulate abstract red poppy flowers as well. Here are some detailed views of this painting:
After emailing these photos to the customer the customer said she was happy with the painting but would like extra yellow and orange in the leaf area of the tree. The painting was going to be hung in a north-facing room and the customer was hoping that my canvas would help to add warmth to the room. The wall itself was about to be painted orange too and it was hoped that the colours in my painting would compliment the colour of the wall. I therefore added quite a lot of orange paint and some more yellow paint to this tree:
My commissioned paintings tend to be a bit more expensive than the other paintings that I do. Part of the reason for this is because of the ‘customising’ service I offer – I will try to adjust the colours of a painting to suit your requirements and then email you photos for your approval. With this tree painting, I emailed the customer some more photos showing the much denser pattern of orange leaves. The customer then made a final request for a few extra red leaves as it was felt that this would help to add some contrasting colour to the orange wall that this painting would be hung on. It was however important not to add too much red, as red is a very dominant colour. Here’s the painting with a little extra red added:
The canvas was then packed up and despatched with the courier to the customer. Here are some before and after photos of the customer’s room, showing the picture that was on the wall before and then my tree painting hanging there after the wall had been painted orange.
