This large 150 x 100 cm painting was created for a client in Kensington, West London. It was a somewhat new style for me, but one that I enjoyed painting very much. I have an enduring fascination with trees and this is a subject matter that I hope to explore a lot more in future paintings.

You can see that the background green colour looks a little different between the photos. This is the effect of the ambient light levels outside when I took the photos. When relevant, I try to point this out to customers and can send additional photos, including multiple close-ups, to try to give as accurate an indication of the true colours of the painting as possible.

This style of abstract painting is expression in its purest form. I always enjoy creating these canvases which have so much colour and energy. I tend to prefer to apply fresh paint on top of paint that is still wet – in this way the colours partially merge in a very natural, spontaneous way. The colours seem to work particularly well on the orange background.

Tunnel of Trees in Autumn Painting on Canvas – Detail

This painting is a variation on my normal style of tree art. I wanted to create a canvas that hinted at a tunnel of trees or perhaps a footpath with trees on either side. I’ve used a lot of orange and yellow paint, as well as many other colours, to simulate the Autumn leaves. This time of year produces some of the most glorious colours in our British countryside and it is endlessly inspiring for artists. I look forward to painting a lot more pictures around this subject in the future!

This painting is a new style for me and I’m quite pleased with the outcome. I was aiming for large blocks of distinct colour whilst also then trying to tie these blocks together to create a complete whole. On top of the areas of strong colour I applied intermittent white highlights. I then added narrow ‘whispy’ lines of mainly white and yellow paint, created by dribbling paint rapidly over the surface of the canvas. I feel that this all helped to bring a sense of uniformity to the artwork.

The customer has now got the canvas stretched by a picture framer in his local area and has hung the painting in his kitchen.
