This is a new version of my semi abstract red flower painting. This large canvas measures approximately 150 x 107.5 cm and I have used acrylic paint. In this picture I’ve experimented with using some light yellow as a base colour for the flower area, before then adding the red abstract flowers on top. Using the yellow in this way helps to suggest some yellow flowers in the background and also creates a degree of ‘warmth’ in the picture that was perhaps absent on some of my other paintings like this, where I applied the red paint for the flowers directly to the white canvas.
A friend of one of my previous customers got in contact recently, after he had seen the tree painting I had done for that customer hanging in his house. The friend was interested in commissioning a tree painting as well as one of my landscape paintings. Initially, this new customer enquired about paintings that were about 180 x 140 cm. Though not impossible, I did explain that my normal maximum height for a painting is about 107 cm, based on the length of the canvas roll I tend to use. After a bit more discussion we settled on me producing two paintings that would be about 180 x 107 cm and 170 x 107 cm.
In this painting the vivid green and yellow sweeps across the foreground and then up both sides of the canvas. With some of my semi abstract work I like to suggest the form of something, rather than depict it fully. This leaves room for the viewer’s imagination to work and our imaginations, afterall, are one of the most precious things we have.
A customer asked if I could paint a similar version of the modern art green tree painting he had seen online. Every painting I do is unique but, when requested, I try to create a similar painting to one that a customer has seen. I particulary enjoy painting these semi-abstract trees with the multi-coloured grass at the base, the wide tree trunk and then the leaf section where I energetically splash and drip a lot of paint on to the canvas.
I like to experiment with different backgrounds to some of my abstract and semi-abstract landscapes and flower paintings. I initially painted a much smaller version of this painting and a customer asked whether it would be possible for me to paint it on to a much larger canvas. The customer was looking for a very large painting that would work with the red and brown shades that he has in his room. There are always differences when you scale up a painting is this way but overall I am very happy with the finished artwork.
